Namibia Weak in Early Education but Growing Stronger

Namibia, where only 15% of children between infancy and age four receive an education, is looking for a means to change the lack of early education; 20% of first graders in Namibia repeat first grade. To change these numbers, Namibia is making strides by making pre-primary education a part of formal education; the country is one of seven in sub-Saharan Africa to see an increase (of seven percent) in pre-primary school enrollment.

Education For All (EFA) Global Action Week (April 19-25, 2012) has brought attention to the need to make changes to education on a global level. EFA Global Action Week has marked an increase in early education around the world and has brought hopes that such gains will continue. “However, we must redouble these worthy efforts, especially among the most vulnerable and disadvantaged,” said an UNESCO education consultant.
