Cambodian Schools Struggle to Recover from Floods

Flooded School, Kandal ProvinceHundreds of schools damaged in Cambodia’s worst monsoons in more than a decade could take a year to recover.  The government estimates about 20,000 children remain out of school.  As of late last month, 323 of 1,400 damaged schools were closed.  Reports say at least 77 schools are beyond repair.  The Education Ministry says teachers and students are still pumping water out of dozens more.

Teachers are also concerned that the floods made the book  and materials shortage even worse.  Orders of 47,000 textbooks for 12 grade levels are in motion, but some schools had to open their doors with no teaching materials.  Officials also point out the flooding is having a “huge impact” on drop-out rates and enrollment.

Save the Children and the Education Ministry are working to fix problems.  They’ve created more than 400 temporary schools in four of the worst-hit provinces.
