Webometrics (Ranking of World Universities), the largest academic ranking of higher education institutions, released a new list of the best universities and business schools in the world. The ranking system is based on universities’ volume of its web contents and the visibility and impact of these web publications according to the number of external links they received. A composite indicator used to measure this is comprised of the following: impact (external links that the university’s web domain receives from third parties), presence (total number of web pages hosted in the main web domain of the university), openness (number of rich files published in dedicated websites since 2008), and excellence (number of academic papers published in high-impact international journals).
For Bosnia and Herzegovina, this was the first time universities were ranked in this manner. Among the 73 universities and higher education institutions that made the list, the University of Sarajevo scored the highest – 1,739th place worldwide – while the Medical Faculty of University of East Sarajevo scored the lowest, coming in in 20,678th place on the world rank list. Individual faculties and business schools scored much better, specifically the University of Sarajevo School of Economics and Business and the University of Banja Luka Faculty of Economics – ranking in the top 500 best business schools in the world.
In comparison, only 20 universities in Macedonia were ranked, all of them scoring higher than those in BiH. The best was the University St. Cyrill and Methodius Skopje in 1,500th place. The worst, in 20,395th place, was the Military Academy “General Mihailo Apostolski.” University St. Cyrill and Methodius was also ranked as Macedonia’s leading university by Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s ranking list, published last year. However, some are skeptical about validity of this list. They believe that the Ministry of Education and Science, which commissioned the ranking, used political manipulation and bribery to rig the list.
