United World Colleges Offer Scholarship to Lucky Laotian

Students from United World College of Southeast Asia in Singapore do the Big Squat! The United World Colleges (UWC) National Committee for the Lao PDR invites young Lao students to apply for a full scholarship to study the International Baccalaureate (IB) two-year curriculum at the UWC of South East Asia, Singapore. Although the teaching language in Singapore is English, there is no English language requirement to apply. Applications are accepted in English or Lao Language. Following a rigorous selection process, the selected candidate is expected to benefit from this inaugural scholarship beginning in August 2013.

The UWC movement was founded in 1962, driven by the values of collaboration, shared learning, understanding, and cooperation. Today, motivated by those same principles, the UWC movement now has 12 campuses across the globe. UWC institutions can be found in Canada, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Norway, Singapore, Swaziland, the United States, the United Kingdom, Costa Rica, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Netherlands. UWC national committees are present in more than 140 countries, contributing to a network of more than 50,000 alumni from more than 181 countries. Every year, over 1000 students are selected by UWC National Committees around the world to study at one of the 12 UWC campuses.

This represents the first year such an opportunity has been available in the Lao PDR. Selected candidates will become Lao ambassadors to the world. They will bring Lao culture to their peers, and be presented with a unique opportunity to broaden their horizons by learning about different cultures and traditions. Notably, this scholarship opportunity is available only to Lao nationals born between 1996 and 1997. The scholarship will cover the cost of tuition, room and board, travel, and provide students with a small living stipend. Consistent with the values of the UWC movement, ideal candidates will be able to thrive in an unfamiliar learning environment and support the values of collaboration and cultural understanding.

The scholarship application process and information is being handled by the UWC National Committee of the Lao PDR, based in Vientiane. All applications are due by April 30, 2013. Information regarding the scholarship has been disseminated through appropriate channels to ensure that it reaches all areas of the country.
