The United Kingdom (UK) has signed a financing agreement, pledging to spend K315 million on the Zambian education sector over the next three years. This financial investment puts the UK as the first G20 country to meet the United Nations target for development spending.
The agreement, signed by Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda and Head of the Department for International Development (DfID) in Zambia, Kevin Quinlan, aspires to reach 3.5 million Zambian children.
In total, the UK expects to spend K560 million on its development programs for Zambia this year. This is approximately a 27 percent increase in expenditure since 2012.
British High Commissioner to Zambia, James Thornton, said, “UK aid will support the implementation of the Government’s National Implementation Framework (NIF III) for the education sector up to 2016. The support focuses on improving the quality of primary education and expanding access to secondary schools, particularly for girls.”
